Do you love rich, glowing, translucent color, rolling your sleeves up, making a glorious mess, & exploring new ways to express yourself? Welcome to printmaking! This 4-session class will focus on two fun and exciting ways to make a fine art print.
Monotypes are one-of-a-kind works of art. You will use printmaking inks to create an image – a painting of sorts – onto a flat surface (a ‘plate’), then transfer your image to paper using our etching press. Monotype is often considered the most ‘painterly’ type of printmaking. You can print different layers overtop each other, creating glowing translucencies in your final resulting artwork.
In Drypoint, you carve a drawing of permanent lines & textures into the plate itself. The carved areas hold ink, and can be printed many times. This technique adds a richness of line and detail to a resulting print, and very excitingly, it lets you create multiple prints containing these elements – whether an edition of identical prints, or a series of prints each of which is unique but which have some elements in common. Monotype and drypoint combine to offer limitless ways to make lines, shapes & textures, create color contrasts and layers, realize your visions, and develop your artistic expression.

All materials will be provided; we will use non-toxic, ecologically friendly printmaking inks. Classes will be held in Verdigris Gallery's studio in Essex, CT, a fully-appointed printmaking studio with inks, glass-top worktables, rollers & brayers, and our Takach and Ettan etching presses.

This will be a small group of 2-4 adults. Both those new to printmaking and those with printmaking experience are welcome. An advantage of being a small group is flexibility, and time for individualized instruction and discussion of your ideas & goals (if you're coming in with some).
If you'd like to take the class but can't do Saturdays, let us know - we may add a second session on a different day/time if there's enough interest.
